What Are Cookies/Clear GIFs and How Do We Use Them
A cookie, in the technology world, is a small data text file which a website stores on your computer's hard drive (if allowed) that may be retrieved to identify you to us. Cookies were developed to assist a website in recognizing the user's browser as a previous visitor, in turn, will save and remember any preferences the user may have set during browsing the site. A cookie cannot be read by another website. A cookie cannot transmit a computer virus or capture personally identifiable information.
Clear GIFs, (also referred as pixel tags, single pixel GIFs, web beacons or action tags) are small graphics with a unique identifier similar to cookie functions and are used to track online movements of users. We do at times work with third-party services that employ clear GIFs for the benefit of helping us calculate advertising effectiveness. The difference between the cookie and clear GIFs is the clear GIFs are invisible on the page, generally the size of the punctuation period (.) Clear GIFs are not tied to your personally identifiable information and only track the visitor traffic on our site. Clear Gifs can work with existing cookies on a computer if they are from the same website or advertising company. For example, if a person visited www.domain.com who also uses an advertising company's clear GIFs, the website would match the clear GIFs identifier and the advertising company's Cookie ID number to show past online traffic. This information can be shared with the advertising company. At times, such information is provided to our third-party advertising partners, however, that information never includes personally identifiable information.
